Short biography (about 300 words)

Dane Lam is an Australian-Chinese-Singaporean conductor known for performances that unite precision with passion, and for a rare ability to lead across borders — musically, geographically and institutionally. The only conductor to hold leadership positions at major musical institutions in the United States, Australia and Asia, he is Music and Artistic Director of the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director of State Opera South Australia and Principal Conductor of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra.

The 2026–27 season brings debuts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Beijing Music Festival, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Alabama Symphony and the Ann Arbor Symphony, following a return to Scottish Opera for Le nozze di Figaro. His recording of Ye Xiaogang’s orchestral music with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, The Backyard of the Village, was released by Signum Classics in 2026, and a forthcoming Pentatone recording with the Hawaiʻi Symphony follows.

In Hawaiʻi, as the orchestra’s first music director, Dane has led the orchestra’s return to the centre of civic life: it was designated the state orchestra of Hawaiʻi in 2026, a recognition he spearheaded. He has introduced televised concerts, launched the HapaSymphony series, grown audiences to record levels, returned the orchestra to neighbor-island touring, and conducted its first complete Beethoven cycle, with Brahms and Mahler cycles under way.

In Adelaide, State Opera’s 50th anniversary season staged five new productions, the most in Australia or New Zealand, from the smallest of the country’s major companies. His Magic Flute, the first Australia–China opera co-production, has played Hong Kong and Beijing. In Xi’an, since 2014, he has led the orchestra’s first opera productions and its first Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler cycles.

He has conducted more than thirty opera productions for companies including Opera Australia, Scottish Opera, Opera Holland Park, Opera Queensland and West Australian Opera, and orchestras on four continents including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Munich Radio Symphony, Residentie Orkest The Hague and all the major Australian state orchestras. A graduate of The Juilliard School and the Royal Northern College of Music, he was assistant to Kurt Masur at the Orchestre National de France.

Long biography

Dane Lam is an Australian-Chinese-Singaporean conductor known for performances that unite precision with passion, and for a rare ability to lead across borders — musically, geographically and institutionally. He moves between opera and symphonic music with equal fluency, and his career is defined as much by the artistic and civic renewal of the organisations he leads as by its international reach.

The only conductor in the world to hold leadership positions at major musical institutions in the United States, Australia and Asia, Dane is Music and Artistic Director of the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Director of State Opera South Australia and Principal Conductor of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra. He conducts orchestras on four continents.

The 2026–27 season brings a sequence of major debuts: the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which he conducted at the Beijing Music Festival, followed by the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Alabama Symphony and the Ann Arbor Symphony in early 2027, after a critically acclaimed return to Scottish Opera for Le nozze di Figaro. His recording of orchestral music by Ye Xiaogang with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, The Backyard of the Village, was released by Signum Classics in 2026, and a forthcoming Pentatone recording with the Hawaiʻi Symphony will be the orchestra’s first commercial release.

In Hawaiʻi, where he became the orchestra’s first music director in 2023, Dane has led a resurgence of its place in civic life. In 2026 the Hawaiʻi Legislature designated it the State of Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, a recognition he spearheaded, and 2026–27 is its first full season under that title. He has introduced televised concerts, launched the HapaSymphony series blending classical and Hawaiian music, grown audiences to record levels, and returned the orchestra to neighbor-island touring after more than a decade. In 2024–25 he conducted the first complete Beethoven symphony cycle in the orchestra’s 125-year history; a Brahms cycle follows in 2026–27 alongside a multi-year Mahler cycle. His programming has also brought the long-neglected music of Honolulu-born Dai-Keong Lee (1915–2005) back to the stage.

In Adelaide, he is reshaping State Opera South Australia as a globally connected company rooted in local voice. State Opera is the smallest of Australia’s major opera companies, and in its 50th year it was the busiest. The 2026 season staged five new productions, more than any company in Australia or New Zealand: La Cenerentola, Norma, Hansel and Gretel and Into the Woods as a shared-set double bill, and Carmen. It also brought the first babies’ opera produced outside Europe and an expanded regional and touring program. His 2025 Magic Flute, the first Australia–China opera co-production, has since played Opera Hong Kong and the Beijing Music Festival; Hansel and Gretel travels to Hong Kong in 2027, and the world-premiere Roméo et Juliette, built in South Australia, goes on to Perth and Ireland. His seasons pair core repertoire with new operas by Missy Mazzoli, Nardi Simpson and Jonathan Dove, co-productions with Scottish Opera, San Francisco Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Irish National Opera and New Zealand Opera, and, in 2027, Our Opera, Our Story, four new micro-operas built from stories crowd-sourced across South Australia.

New music is at the centre of both companies. In three years across Honolulu and Adelaide he has commissioned more than twenty new works, from composers including Huang Ruo, Paola Prestini, Ye Xiaogang, Deborah Cheetham Fraillon and the Hawaiʻi Symphony’s composer in residence, Michael-Thomas Foumai. Several of these works have been taken up by orchestras worldwide.

In 2014, Dane was appointed Principal Conductor of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, the first non-Chinese conductor to hold such a position with a major Chinese orchestra. Under his leadership its subscription series has nearly doubled and the orchestra has become one of the country’s most artistically vibrant and institutionally secure, welcoming artists of the calibre of José Carreras, Midori, Stephen Hough and Barry Douglas, launching Xi’an’s first full-scale opera productions, and presenting its inaugural Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler symphony cycles. The 2016 televised Mid-Autumn Festival Gala with the Xi’an Symphony reached a global audience of hundreds of millions.

Dane was a leading figure in Australia’s post-pandemic cultural revival, conducting the first full-capacity orchestral concert in the world after lockdown with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in August 2020. During 2020–21 he was Resident Conductor and Associate Music Director of Opera Queensland, the first titled conductor in the company’s history.

Opera has always been central to his career. He has conducted more than thirty productions with companies including Opera Australia, Scottish Opera, Opera Queensland, West Australian Opera, Opera Holland Park, Shaan’xi Grand Theatre and Hawaiʻi Opera Theatre. He is especially in demand for his Mozart, praised for its dramatic clarity and musical cohesion, and his repertoire spans Puccini, Verdi, Mascagni, Cilea and Gluck as well as contemporary composers such as Carl Davis and Will Todd. He is particularly admired for drawing emotionally detailed performances of the Italian repertoire from singers and orchestras alike.

As a symphonic guest conductor, Dane has led the London Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Munich Radio Symphony, Residentie Orkest The Hague, Beethoven Orchester Bonn, City of London Sinfonia and Verbier Festival Orchestra. In the Asia-Pacific region he has conducted the symphony orchestras of Shenzhen, Beijing, Suzhou, Kunming and Dunedin, and all the major Australian state orchestras. His Beethoven is noted for its immediacy and visceral energy, and his Mahler for the vivid modernity and emotional range it draws from the orchestra.

Dane made his professional debut at eighteen with the Sydney Symphony at the Sydney Opera House. After undergraduate studies at the University of Queensland, Dane studied conducting at The Juilliard School under James DePreist and later at the Royal Northern College of Music with Sir Mark Elder. He was assistant to Kurt Masur at the Orchestre National de France and a protégé of Gianluigi Gelmetti, under whose mentorship he worked during the maestro’s tenures at the Sydney Symphony and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma.

Whether conducting Mahler in Honolulu, Mozart in Beijing or a new Australian opera in Adelaide, Dane Lam builds bridges: between cultures and communities, between artists and audiences, and between what music has been and what it can still become.
